History
In 1876, a group of Baptist Pioneers realized the need for a Baptist church in this community. Christopher Smith donated land for a church building to be built. They constructed a crude brush arbor on the property as the first meeting place. As winter approached, the group felt the need for a more substantial building. They constructed a one-room log cabin. As the membership increased, a new building was built in 1883.
In 1907, the congregation constructed a new auditorium. Services were held once a month in this building until November of 1939 when the congregation voted to hold services twice a month. The church became “full time” in August of 1943 calling Rev. A.C. Carpenter as Pastor.
Steady growth continued from the time the building was constructed with Sunday School begining in 1908. In 1948, and educational wing was constructed adjacent to the auditorium. This building still serves as vital space to the present day.
In 1955, the church constructed a new auditorium. In 1960, a left wing was added to this building containing a new Fellowship Hall and children’s Sunday School space. The steeple was donated to the church and dedicated on October 17, 1971 in memory of Gwynn Cantrell. At the church’s centenial celebration, membership totalled 700.
Throughout the 1990’s, Level Grove experienced great growth leading to the need of additional worship and education space. In 1997, the church held a ground-breaking ceremony for construction of a new state of the art worship center.
